Import and export

Go to Options Pages → Import / Export to move menus to another site, or to keep a copy of them.

An export contains the menus you choose, with their pages and fields, and the values of their options. Import it and the other site has the same options pages, filled in.

Export

  1. Check the menus you want to export (or Check all).
  2. Click Export file.

You get a JSON file. It contains the values of the fields too, so treat it like a backup of your settings: values of password fields are in it as well.

Import

  1. Click Select a file, or drop the file on the page.
  2. You see what would happen, before anything is changed. Every menu, page, field and value has a checkbox (Menu, Page, Field and Value) and a status:
    • New: not on this site yet, it is imported.
    • Already on this site, replaced when checked: the menu exists. Check Menu to replace it.
    • Same value as on this site or Different value on this site, replaced when checked: for an option. A different value is only replaced when you check Value. The eye next to it shows the value in the file.
    • Belongs to something else: the option name is used by WordPress or another plugin. It is never overwritten.
    • Cannot be imported: something in the file is not valid. The reason is shown.
  3. Check what you want and click Import selection.

An import is all or nothing: when one part fails, nothing is changed. Everything goes through the same checks as saving in the editor.

Replacing a menu replaces it completely, also when its fields have another type now. Options of fields that are not in the file any more are deleted.

Things to know

  • Images and files store the ID of an attachment in the media library. The media library is not exported, so on another site that ID points to another file, or to nothing (then the value becomes empty). Choose the image or file again after the import.
  • Exports of older versions (0.9) can be imported. A file of a newer version of the plugin is refused, with a message.
  • The file can be at most 5 MB. Developers can change this with the filter aop_import_max_bytes.
